Mainly financial and legal papers of William L. Quesenberry and James S. Quesenberry of King George and Westmoreland counties, Va., concerning their assumption of outstanding debts, hiring of African- American slaves, settlement of accounts, and James S. Quesenberry's role as a guardian, trustee, and executor for several persons. Other financial and legal papers, including promissory bonds, are from several members of the Stiff family, dry-goods merchants of King George and presumably Westmoreland counties, Va. Represented are James H. Stiff & Co., W.W. Stiff & Payne, W.W. Stiff, and F.W. Stiff & Co. At least one of these merchants had a partnership with James S. Quesenberry. Also included are a letter of Rutherford Birchard Hayes concerning George Washington's birthplace, Popes Creek, Westmoreland County, Va.; and an invitation from William Howard Taft.

Rutherford B. Hayes was born in Delaware, Ohio, in 1822 and earned degrees from Kenyon College and Harvard Law School before starting a career as a lawyer in Cincinnati. Hayes served as a major general in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War and was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1864. Hayes then was elected Governor of Ohio and later served one term as President of the United States (1877-1881) before retiring to his home in Fremont, Ohio, where he died in 1893.President of the Uni...
